The Placer Food Bank is a food clearinghouse. We receive, inspect, sort, weigh and package food for delivery to a network of charitable agencies throughout Placer, El Dorado and Nevada Counties. These agencies provide supplemental food to low-income households, the working poor, handicapped or disabled individuals, senior citizen and children’s programs.
During the 2010-2011 fiscal year, the Placer Food Bank distributed food to over 46 food programs and feeding agencies. Last year alone, our food deliveries totaled nearly 5.7 million pounds of food, and we served over an average of 48,000 individuals a month through our partner agencies and feeding programs.
Much of the food we receive, organize and distribute comes from our food program partners Feeding America (America’s Second Harvest), Food For Families and the USDA Food Program. The remainder comes from the generous cash and food donations of individuals, organizations and businesses in our community.
Whether here in our community or elsewhere in the world, hunger rarely occurs because there is simply not enough food; rather, hunger occurs because families and individuals cannot afford to buy the food. Hunger does not discriminate.
The Placer Food Bank is continually working to raise awareness of the issues related to domestic hunger in our community, and is an active member of Feeding America and the California Association of Food Banks.
